OVERVIEW

Château Dauzac, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Médoc classification, is a Margaux estate defined by boldness. Its history reaches back to the 12th century, yet successive owners have consistently looked forward: Dauzac pioneered the Bordeaux mixture in 1884 to combat mildew, introduced early cellar thermoregulation around World War II, and has never stopped asking what it means to make wine in genuine harmony with the land. That inventive spirit now guides the estate’s move toward naturalness and its commitment to agroforestry and biodynamic principles.

The estate sits within a 120‑hectare ecosystem that includes a 49‑hectare vineyard (45 ha in Margaux, 4 ha in Haut‑Médoc) and a surrounding network of woods, meadows, sheep pastures, beehives, a vegetable garden, and an arboretum of rare species. That biodiversity is stewarded in harmony with the rhythms of the Garonne River, which has helped shape Margaux for millions of years. Dauzac’s ambition is clear: to rise among the finest Médoc Grands Crus Classés maximizing the health and resilience of the whole estate.

Since 1924, the estate has worn an emperor‑yellow label—a deliberate emblem of light, clarity, and sensory exploration, and a vivid marker of the vision that drives Dauzac’s ecological practices and forward-looking spirit.

HISTORY

The origins of the yellow label traces back to the Johnston family, then owners of Dauzac, who drew inspiration from the imperial yellow reserved for Chinese emperors a color synonymous with prestige and exclusivity. The choice set Dauzac apart from its Bordeaux peers and signaled a forward-looking mindset rooted in tradition.

Over time, the yellow label came to symbolize far more than visual distinction; it serves as a “North Star,” honoring the estate’s storied past while signalling an appetite for innovation. This duality—heritage and progress—aligns with the current stewardship of the Roulleau family and Laurent Fortin, who together are deepening the estate’s connection to place while pushing it forward.

Margaux is magic, yellow is my world.

PHILOSOPHY

Dauzac’s ethos interweaves the art of living with biodiversity, treating humans as living members of complex ecosystems and cultivating the pleasures that belong within them—gastronomy, wine, and the art of hospitality. There is an element of enchantment to this work: Margaux’s magic, born of its ancient, millions-of-years-old river plateau, infuses the vines, the cellar, and the table with a sense of wonder. Guided by French savoir-faire, the estate translates this wonder into practice—skilled stewardship, refined hospitality, and an aesthetic that honors terroir while inviting delight.

Innovation has long been part of Dauzac’s DNA, from early technical advances to modern commitments to sustainability and biodiversity. This forward-thinking mindset is paired with deep respect for tradition, ensuring that progress is always rooted in the heritage and character of Margaux.

By nurturing biodiversity, embracing responsible viticulture, and continually refining their craft, the estate strives to reveal the full potential of its gravelly soils while advancing its ambition to stand among the finest Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.
